This winter, I taught a unit on the Iditarod Sled Dog race and included it on this website (Click here for Unit Plan, standard alignment, objectives and assessments). In this unit, students are asked to research a particular topic of interest to them, modeled after an Inquiry Based Model of teaching and learning. A LiveBinders site provides previously vetted resources for students to use during their research and inquiry.
- include light tech devices such as graphic organizers, cooperative learning arrangements, use of highlighters, sticky notes, leveled web resources (lower reading level with same content)
- plan space for individual learning activities that provides for student learning styles
- provide multiple representations of materials, not only written online documents
- consultation with students' IEP teams to identify and clarify needs and resources
- allow for cooperative groups
- use text-to-speech software for reading aloud web pages used during research
- provide more forms of media containing video and audio
- carve out time for more frequent student/teacher conferencing
- incorporate formative assessments that drive teaching and learning mid-project
